Duke University opened its medical school in 1930. The school now offers the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree as well as the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) degree, Master of Health Sciences (M.H.S.) degrees in physician and pathologist assistant studies, clinical leadership and clinical research and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in basic sciences. In recent years, the school has received more than 5,000 applications for 100 places in the M.D. program, according to the school's website.
Duke's School of Medicine contains seven basic sciences departments and 12 clinical sciences departments. In 2010, Duke University tied for 6th in "U.S. News & World Report" magazine's ranking of research medical schools and tied for 42nd in the same magazine's ranking of primary care medical schools.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established its School of Medicine in 1879. In 2009, the school had about 750 students, including 160 entering M.D. students. The school contains 10 basic science departments and 18 clinical departments. In addition to the M.D. program, the school also offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs in 10 basic science departments as well as in occupational science, speech and hearing sciences and human movement science. In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked UNC Chapel Hill 2nd among primary care medical schools and 20th among research medical schools.

Wake Forest University founded its medical school in 1902. The School of Medicine offers Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree programs, Master of Medical Science (M.M.S.) degree programs for aspiring physicians' assistants, Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree programs in anesthesia nursing and certification programs in medical laboratory science and medical ultrasound.
