List of Ontario Medical Schools

Students planning to attend medical school in Ontario, Canada have a variety of choices. Each school has its own requirements for admission, so candidates must be aware of the qualifications for consideration at each individual school before applying. The Ontario Medical School Application Service, a non-profit organization, may process and forward all applications to medical schools, but it is the applicant's responsibility to make sure the requirements for each school are met and their application is complete.
  1. Schulich School of Medicine

    • Four-year undergraduate degrees leading to a Bachelor's in Medical Science are offered at the Schulich School of Medicine, along with an MD/PhD program. Students applying for the MD/PhD program must have a Masters or Honors degree. In 2009, 147 students were admitted into the program. The school's state-of-the-art building features multimedia classrooms with video conferencing, clinical skills learning spaces for small groups and anatomy instructional facilities. Founded in 1881, the school's undergraduate curriculum blends lab exercises, lectures, and clinical experience in local hospitals and clinics throughout the southwest Ontario region. Its mission statement states that it prepares students to be patient-centered physicians in postgraduate medical programs.

    Northern Ontario School of Medicine

    • According to its website, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) has a mandate to contribute to the health care of people residing in Northern Ontario. It fulfills this purpose by increasing the number of physicians who choose to remain and work in the area after they graduate. Admission reflects the demographics of the region, including those of Franco-Ontarian and aboriginal backgrounds. NOSM's stated intention is to maximize the number of students from Northern Ontario. Each March and April, applicant interviews for the 56 places in the class are conducted in both Thunder Bay and Sudbury. NOSM curriculum relies heavily on a virtual learning environment, including on-line tutorials, videoconferencing, and webcasts. Their MD program focuses on a small-group learning environment. Residency programs are offered throughout Northern Ontario in collaboration with the University of Ottawa and McMaster University.

    Queen's University School of Medicine

    • At Queen' University School of Medicine, 100 students are accepted annually into the 4-year program aimed at a Doctor of Medicine degree. Admission is based on academic record and a personal assessment. The campus includes the Glaxo Wellcome Clinical Education Centre, which includes 16 examination rooms, 5 meeting rooms and computer labs. Patients participate in sessions so that students may learn clinical skills. The Bracken Health Sciences Library, open 90 hours weekly, has access to various medical/health databases. Botterell Hall houses the major departments and classrooms. The university offers postgraduate and continuing education courses. Various scholarships and bursaries are available.
