List of Private Medical Schools

There are numerous reputable institutions across the country--both public and private--for the study medicine. Although public universities are aided by federal and/or state funding, private institutions are more often funded by private parties. Private medical school provide a thorough education for the future medical expert.
  1. Harvard Medical School

    • Harvard is the oldest private university in the country. As a member of the Ivy League, the school excels in many areas of study. In particular, Harvard Medical School is one of the most respected in the country and, in 2010, was ranked was number 1 by U.S. News & World Report, which lists both public and private schools. There are numerous departments within the medical school, including Neurobiology, Pathology and Genetics. Students, who number over 1,300, have the opportunity to earn either an M.D. or a Ph.D. Harvard Medical School is also home to the Countway Library and its more than 650,000 medical-based volumes.

    Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

    • The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine was established in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1894, four years after the university's opening. Although there are fewer than 1,300 students, the full-time faculty staff alone numbers nearly 4,500. This private school, which U.S. News & World Report ranked as the number 3 medical school in the country in 2010, offers programs for both undergraduate and graduate students and both fellowships and residencies. Degrees are

      offered in an array of disciplines, from Ophthalmology to Vascular Surgery. Located right on campus is Johns Hopkins Hospital, which provides medical students at the school with a chance to work closely with one of the most highly regarded hospitals in the country.

    Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine

    • Washington University in St. Louis, which dates back to 1853, is one of the most respected private universities in the midwest. The medical school has been singled out for much praise, with U.S. News & World Report ranking it number 4 in the country. The M.D. programs at Washington University include Genetic Epidemiology and Psychiatric Epidemiology. The school also offers graduate degrees in Biology & Biomedical Sciences and Medical Education. The medical school is known, in particular, for its Physical Therapy, which allows students to actively participate in clinical practice.

    Mount Sinai School of Medicine

    • Mount Sinai School of Medicine is a private medical school located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Unlike many medical institutions, Mount Sinai is not a wing of a larger university but a school unto itself. Although it is fairly new, having been established in 1963, and has just over 500 students, the school ranks number 18 among all medical programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The medical school covers both undergraduate and graduate students and offers both residencies and fellowships. The clinical departments at Mount Sinai include Dentistry, Neurosurgery and Pediatrics. The school also works in part with Mount Sinai Medical Center, which is one of New York City's most highly regarded centers of health.
