East Carolina University, founded in 1907 to train teachers, is a public university with approximately 28,000 students. It includes nine undergraduate colleges, a graduate school and two professional schools with curricula leading to 104 bachelor's degree programs, 73 master's degree programs and 18 doctoral degree programs plus medical and dentistry degrees. More than 300 classrooms are technologically enhanced, and the university manages the largest installation of an elearning application within the University of North Carolina system. Pitt Community College is an accredited state-supported two-year institution for higher education and technical training with programs leading to 44 associate degrees and 22 diplomas in fields such as business, construction, health services and legal science. Its 18 University Transfer programs prepare students to pursue a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university. It also makes approximately 200 courses available via the Internet and other outreach services. Since its founding in 1961, it has grown to an enrollment of 8,600 students and has expanded its physical facilities to 12 buildings.
Shaw University, a private Baptist institution in Raleigh, N.C., operates a remote campus in Greenville as a unit of its Colleges of Adult and Professional Education, also known as CAPE. This facility enables motivated individuals with full-time job or family commitments to obtain an undergraduate degree when attendance at other higher learning schools is not possible. CAPE offers students an alternative educational opportunity with the nontraditional instruction program of internships, seminars, life experiences and independent studies in additional to standard classes. Day, evening and weekend options are available. Applicants should have either two years of college study or three years of work experience.
Miller-Motte College is a for-profit technical training institution owned by Delta Career Education Corporation. Aiming to prepare students for jobs growing in demand, it offers certificate and diploma programs in network administration, cosmetology, massage therapy, medical billing, medical assisting and dental assisting. Instruction is a combination of classes and practical experience. In addition, students can earn online associate and bachelor's degrees from the headquarters site in Wilmington, N.C. The Greenville campus includes classrooms, laboratories, a library and a student lounge. Although it is a commuter school, Miller-Motte believes in nurturing school spirit and schedules several social events annually.
