A public college, Appalachian State University is in the rural northwestern town of Boone, approximately 85 miles west of Winston-Salem. Founded in 1899, the school has a total enrollment of more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students in the Bachelor of Science in accounting program have the option to study abroad for one semester or during the summer. Students in the major also take courses in management and economics. Appalachian State also grants a Master of Science in accounting as part of its graduate school offerings. In 2010, the college's graduate school received the 8th-place ranking among all master's programs at southern college from U.S. News and World Report.

Established in 1865 by the Baptist Church, Shaw University has a combined enrollment of less than 3,000 students. The Raleigh-based college offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a focus in accounting. Students in the program take courses in ethics, law, auditing and mathematics and are encouraged to participate in internships to gain hands-on experience in the field. The university also offers a bachelor's program through its Colleges of Adult & Professional Education, which caters to working adults by offering courses on a part-time basis.

U.S. News and World Report awarded Wake Forest University the 28th place ranking among all universities in the United States in 2010. Located in Raleigh, the private, nonsectarian college has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,500 students. Admission to the university is highly competitive; less than 40 percent of those who apply receive an invitation to enroll, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The school's Calloway School of Business & Accountancy grants a bachelor's degree in accountancy with the option to spend a fifth year at the school to complete a master's in the field. The graduate program allows students to specialize in an area like auditing, tax consulting, investment banking, or financial consulting.
