North Carolina Universities & Colleges in the ACC Conference

Founded on May 8, 1953 and headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Atlantic Coast Conference originally consisted of seven members. Eddie Cameron from Duke University suggested the name Atlantic Coast Conference and all of the members unanimously approved it. In 2005, the conference expanded to 12-member conference. Of the 12 member schools, North Carolina is home to four of the schools, which are Duke University, Wake Forest, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University.
  1. Duke University

    • Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke University has approximately 13,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Established in 1924, the school participates in 26 NCAA Division I varsity sports. The Duke Blue Devils basketball team won the national championship in 1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010. Duke has professional and graduate schools including schools of medicine, law and divinity. The college is located on 9,000 acres and it has 220 buildings.

    Wake Forest University

    • Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Wake Forest University is a private, liberal arts college. Established in 1834, the school has approximately 7,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Wake Forest school colors are old gold and black and the mascot for the school is the Demon Deacon. The college offers 37 majors and it has nationally-ranked schools of law and medicine. Wake Forest has 16 varsity sport teams.

    University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    • Founded in 1789, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill holds the honored distinction as being the first public university in the United States. The school has approximately 18,000 undergraduate students enrolled and it has over 3,200 faculty members. UNC at Chapel Hill offers 72 majors and it has 300 study-abroad programs. The University of North Carolina Tar Heels has 28 varsity sport teams. Famous athletes that attended the school include Michael Jordan (basketball), Julius Peppers (football) and Davis Love III (golf).

    North Carolina State University

    • Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, NC State has approximately 34,000 students working towards undergraduate and graduate degrees. Founded as a land-grant institution in 1887, the university has 10 colleges and schools. The North Carolina State University Wolfpack played its very first football game in 1892. The school has won two NCAA national championships and it competes in 23 intercollegiate varsity sports.
