North Carolina State University is North Carolina's only veterinary medical college. The college graduated its first class of veterinarians in 1985. Today, the college has grown to cover 180 acres in Raleigh, North Carolina. The campus includes 20 buildings, including the Centennial Biomedical Campus. The College of Veterinary Medicine is separated into three departments of instruction: Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences and Population Health and Pathobiology. The doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a four-year Bachelor's degree, but the school also offers Master's and Doctorate degree programs in veterinary medicine. The school offers one- to three-year internships and residency training.

Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, North Carolina, was founded in 1961. The college offers a two-year Associate's degree under its Veterinary Medical Technology program, which is part of the Allied Health Technologies division. The program was the first of its kind in North Carolina and is accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education. Through the program, students learn to operate in a vet clinic or hospital setting. They gain lab experience and exposure to animals, such as rabbits, dogs, cats, cattle and horses. Students are required to wear uniforms. The program is designed to prepare students for careers with private veterinary practices, research facilities, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic labs, zoos, wildlife rehab centers, state and federal agencies and vet teaching hospitals. Courses focus on animal health through studying nutrition, disease, anatomy, radiology, parasitology, pharmacology, lab technique and office practices. The program features a large dog and cat ward. Only the school's main campus in Sanford offers courses in the program.

The two-year college located in Dallas, North Carolina, offers an Associate's degree in Applied Science. The degree is for veterinary medical technology. The curriculum prepares students to work as assists to veterinarians working with small and large animals. The courses teach students to prepare animals, instruments and equipment and medication. Students learn how to assist with animal examinations and surgeries, how to college animal specimens, how to apply bandages and how to provide proper husbandry for animals. Students also learn to manage an office. Graduates are able to work in private vet clinics, diagnostic and research facilities and other businesses related to animal care.
