Located in Laurinburg in the sand hills of North Carolina, St. Andrews is an undergraduate liberal arts college. The college was established in 1958 from the merger of Flora Macdonald College and the Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton. Some of the features of St. Andrews include study-abroad programs, an award-winning bag pipe band and a championship equestrian teams.
Methodist University is located in Fayetteville and offers 70 undergraduate majors. Its three graduate programs are the Professional Master of Business Administration, Master of Justice Administration and Physician Assistant Program. It first opened in 1960 after a citizens' group decided that the town needed a private, religion-based college.
First founded in 1951, Mount Olive has since expanded to include seven campuses throughout North Carolina, including one in nearby Wilmington. Mount Olive is the third most affordable private college in the state and provides many adult educational opportunities at its Evening College. The college has 15 NCAA Division II teams and more tthan 40 available majors.
Although its flagship campus is located in Raleigh, Shaw has altogether nine campuses throughout the state, including one in Wilmington. Another campus is located in Fayetteville. Shaw was founded in 1865 as the first black college of the American South. It's religiously affiliated with the Baptist Church and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Also affiliated with the university are colleges dedicated to adult education.
