Library Information Science Programs

Library and Information Science education occurs mainly at the graduate level, although there are some programs for library assistants at the associate's degree level. Master's level programs generally span two years and are offered in many formats--on campus and online--at public and private universities. These programs focus on the theoretical underpinnings of Library Science as well as practical applications.
  1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

    • The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, or the iSchool at Illinois, has the top ranked Library and Information science program in the U.S., according to a 2009 ranking by U.S. News & World Report. Master's and doctorates are offered across the spectrum of the field, including a master's in Bioinformatics. The school is known for its distance-education program, LEEP, through which you can earn a master's degree in Library and Information Science, Certificates of Advanced Study in several disciplines, including Digital Libraries, or a K-12 Library Information Specialist Certificate.

    University of North Carolina

    • The University of North Carolina's School of Information and Library Science offers degrees from the undergraduate to the doctoral level, including a bachelor of science in Information Science as well as master's degrees in Library Science and Information Science. Advanced study certificates and continuing-education opportunities allow UNC to provide educational opportunities to students at all stages of professional development.

    Syracuse University

    • Located in upstate New York, the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University focuses mainly on Information Management. Degrees offered include a bachelor of science in Information Management & Technology; master's degrees in Library and Information Science and Information Management; and a doctoral program. All master's level degrees and certificates are available on campus or by distance education. The school also offers executive programs for those who already work in mid- to upper-level management.

    University of Washington

    • In addition to non-degree options, the University of Washington in Seattle offers four degree programs: a bachelor's in Informatics, a master's in Library and Information Science, a master's in Information Management, and an Information Science doctorate. One of the benefits of this program is the opportunity to do directed fieldwork under the supervision of a practicing librarian, which allows students to acquire real-world work experience.
