Master's Programs in Library Science in California

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) is the master's degree required by most professional library positions. An MLIS degree can be obtained through coursework at an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution. ALA accreditation indicates that the program has undergone external review and meets ALA Committee standards. Programs prepare students for work in public and private libraries, as well as vendor work. California has two universities that offer a master's degree in library science.
  1. San Jose State University

    • San Jose State University offers an ALA-accredited degree of Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS). The degree requires the successful completion of 43 units, including a culminating experience that complies with university regulations and school policies. All of the courses are taught completely online. Students and instructors interact through web conferencing, social networks and web-based learning systems. Through the use of such sophisticated technology, the program successfully prepares students for ever-changing information landscape and allows them to find ways to apply technology to all areas of their work. The program offers a number of specializations including academic libraries, archival studies, executive MLIS, information organization and description, management, public libraries, reference services and instruction, special libraries, teacher librarianship, web design and technology, and youth librarianship.
