California Lutheran University

• The exercise science department at California Lutheran University (CLU) offers coursework in health, human performance and physical education and pedagogy, which can be applied toward a bachelor's of science degree. Students gain hands-on experience at the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center's Human Performance Lab, which is equipped with motion capture and analysis systems and metabolic measurement systems.

  Those studying pedagogy and physical education have fieldwork opportunities at Soiland Recreation Center. Coursework in exercise science includes chemistry, anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

University of California at San Diego

• The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) offers a certificate program for those working in the fitness and lifestyle industries. The certificate in fitness instruction and exercise science is offered through UCSD's extension studies and public programs department. The program includes 22 units of study, and includes coursework in physiology of exercise, fundamentals of anatomy and kinesiology.

  Students may complete the program in an intensive four-quarter series or study in an extended format, to accommodate a work schedule, and complete the program in two to five years. After completing coursework, students must pass an exam administered by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and complete an internship before earning their certificate.
