Vanderbilt University's Peabody College offers a four-year special education degree program that's designed to train students to work with disabled children in school settings. Students interested in pursuing a license to teach non-disabled children can also do so.
This interdisciplinary program requires students to work with special populations in internship settings while taking academic classes. Students can concentrate in one of five areas: mild to moderate disabilities, moderate to severe disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, or early childhood education.

The special education degree program at the University of Texas--Austin labels itself as a generic special education program. Students work towards earning qualification to teach special education students at the primary or secondary school level. However, the program does not offer courses in working with specific disabled populations. Students who wish to teach must take a 133-hour program in applied learning and development, with a concentration in special education.
