Special education programs provide teachers with the training and educational background that prepares them to work with students who have mild to moderate disabilities. These special education programs in Nevada offer graduate-level education which prepares the student for certification as a special education teacher.
  1. University of Nevada, Las Vegas

    • The University of Nevada at Las Vegas offers students an option to pursue an undergraduate degree in special education leading to a bachelor's degree upon completion. This program is designed to be completed over the course of four years of full-time study and requires students to take courses that include valuing cultural diversity, counseling and consulting skills for class teachers, introduction to special education, legal aspects of special education, strategies for students with special education and serving individuals with disabilities and their families.

    University of Nevada at Reno

    • The University of Nevada at Reno offers a master's degree program in special education that provides students with the opportunity to pursue a naster of arts or a master of education degree. The education degree requires no thesis while the arts degree requires the completion of a thesis. Six specialization options are offered in this program and include specific learning disabilities; serious emotional and behavioral disorders; generalist endorsement in mild to moderate disabilities; early childhood special education and early intervention; autism; and moderate to profound mental retardation. Required courses include multicultural concerns in education, assessment for special education teachers, special education curriculum and trends and issues in special education.

    National University

    • National University offers a master of science in its secondary education degree program with licensure in special education that prepares aspiring teachers to work with students who have mild to moderate disabilities between kindergarten and the 12th grade. Students are not awarded the degree and license until he or she has completed the student teaching experience. The program requires students to complete 15 courses, two of which are nine-week student teaching courses. Other required courses include educational psychology, positive behavior support, collaboration and consultation, technology for persons with disabilities and reading methods for special education.
