Special Education Certification Programs in Georgia

With a special education certification, individuals can work with children who have various disabilities. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of special education teachers is expected to increase by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018. Median annual wages for these professionals in May 2008 were $50,020. Several colleges in Georgia offer special education certification programs that allow teachers to serve a variety of special needs students.

    • The Georgia State University College of Education offers several nondegree certification programs in special education through its Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education. The university is located in Atlanta. Programs for graduate students include focuses on autism, deaf education, early childhood education, preschool, mental retardation, behavior-learning disabilities and physical/health disabilities. Examples of courses in these programs include mathematics concepts for special learners, strategies for challenging behavior and characteristics/instructional strategies for students with disabilities.     Georgia College and State University

    • Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville offers a certification program in special education in the teaching field. Students who have completed an undergraduate program in special education or a Master of Arts in the teaching program in special education are recommended for an initial teaching certificate that is valid for five years. Certification comes from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and involves several application steps.     University of West Georgia

    • The University of West Georgia in Carrollton offers a nondegree teaching certificate program in special education. Certification comes from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. These initial Georgia teaching certificates are good for five years. To obtain a certificate, students must complete the coursework required by their plan of study and pass assessment tests. Students also can complete coursework to add the director of special education endorsement studies to a current certificate. Founded in 1906, the University of West Georgia is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
