Montessori Teacher Certification Programs

Montessori schools do not follow public, parochial or charter school models. Instruction is geared to the individual student, and classes feature a mixture of ages. Montessori education stresses learning as a discovery activity, and grouping students together is rare and often discouraged. Since Montessori classrooms are far removed from the typical public school curriculum, prospective teachers need and undergo a different type of training and certification. When you're looking for a Montessori certification program, make sure it is accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).
  1. TMI Denver

    • The Montessori Institute at Denver has a relationship with Loyola University, where aspiring teachers can earn a masters of education or a certificate of advanced study. Students must apply to both TMI Denver and Loyola, and they must register concurrently at both institutions, once admitted. The degree requires nine credit hours at Loyola and 27 at TMI Denver. The primary education track is on sabbatical as of September 2010, leaving the graduate degree the only option.

    Capitol Region Education Council (CREC)

    • The CREC admits prospective teachers centered around an application packet, but CREC also wants applicants to have a previous bachelors degree in any field. Applicants are also subject to a personal interview. This is necessary because the CREC believes success is based around having clear oral and written skills, the ability to collaborate, and organizational skills with an attention to detail. So, unlike mainstream education training, a student cannot go straight from high school into teacher training.

    Montessori Institute Northwest (MINW)

    • MINW offers certifications in birth to three years old, as well as ages three to six. Like TMI Denver, MINW has a relationship with Loyola Unversity, where students can apply 27 of their credit hours toward a masters of education. MINW also has a relationship with Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon, in which 36 credit hours can be applied toward a bachelors.
