Conditional teaching certificates, issued by the Maine Department of Education, can be conferred upon graduates with a bachelor's degree. The conditional teaching certificate is granted under the understanding that the individual will take a specified list of education courses needed to become fully certified. The individual can teach in Maine during that time. Which courses and how many are needed for completion will be determined by the Maine Department of Education and depend on the grade the individual plans to teach.

The University of Maine provides college graduates with a full-time, 12-month master of arts in teaching (MAT) degree. The program is separated into two different sets--the Elementary (K-8) set, with a maximum of 15 students accepted each year, or the Secondary (7-12) set, with a maximum of 18 students accepted each year. Each set prepares individuals with education courses and internships in schools in order to receive the Maine Teacher Certification. The MAT program requires graduates of four-year colleges to have a bachelor's degree in liberal arts or sciences, to have passed the Praxis I exam and to submit their GRE or MAT scores.
