The University of Texas at El Paso's alternative teaching certificate program consists of 24 options for students to choose from as their certification area. Students can choose to take courses online or on campus and the entire program can be completed in either format in one year. Students can choose areas such as journalism, Spanish, German, French, mathematics, physical science and art, and each specialization area typically requires between four and five classes for completion.

Students who enroll in this program may use the hours as credits towards a master's degree. South Texas College has an alternative teaching certificate program that gives students the choice of 24 specialized content areas. Some examples of approved certification areas include health, history, physical education, social studies and special education. Students spend 27 hours of classroom instruction on the content area they choose along with a pedagogies and professional responsibilities preparation course and an internship that takes place in the fall and spring semesters.

McLennan Community College has a teacher certification program that prepares individuals who have a bachelor's degree with the essentials and certificate to enter the teaching profession in the state of Texas. Students can choose from more than 20 specialization areas in which they would like to teach and will take three courses including an internship that lasts for two semesters, a content specialization course, and a professional responsibilities and pedagogy course.
