Psychology Programs at Texas Universities

The American Psychological Association (APA) explains on its website that psychology is the study of how both brain function and environment influence human and animal behavior. According to the APA, nearly 75,000 students earned bachelor's degrees in the field in 2000; students in undergraduate or graduate psychology programs in Texas engage in research and study leading to careers as counselors, teachers and researchers.

    • Undergraduate psychology students can select from a bachelor of arts (BA) or a bachelor of science (BS) degree track. Students in both tracks complete at least 42 credits of psychology course work; however, students in the BS track take more core courses and must maintain a minimum psychology GPA of 3.5 as opposed to the 2.5 GPA required of students in the BA track. Students complete courses in general psychology, experimental methods, and social, developmental and health psychology. Psychology students at the University of North Texas consult with academic advisors to make sure they are meeting degree requirements and for assistance with applying to graduate programs. Qualified students can apply for membership to Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology majors on the undergraduate and graduate levels.
