The University of North Texas has a student body of 28,474 making it the largest public university in Northern Texas. Degrees are offered at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. Students who enroll here will find a plethora of academic majors available from language pathology to chemistry and criminal justice. For the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the tuition costs are quite reasonable, with in-state residents paying just $5,663 a year. Room and board is an additional $6,716. Out-of-state classmates pay considerably more at a yearly tuition rate of $14,963. While just 4 percent of the student are out-of-state residents, approximately 16,000 students live on campus. Admission is competitive with just over half of all accepted students placing in the top quarter of their graduating high school class.

Texas Women's University was originally founded as the Girls Industrial College in 1901. Since then, the school has grown into a major university of over 7,000 students offering degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. Despite the name, men make up 7 percent of the TWU population. You can earn a degree in subjects ranging from accounting to fashion design. TWU is also home to the world's largest doctoral program in nursing. As of 2010, tuition for in-state students is $4,740 with room and board costing an additional $6,074. Admission is mildly competitive with a majority of applicants being admitted and 30 percent ranking in the top quarter of their high school graduating class.

North Central Texas College, located just outside of the Denton city limits, is a great option for students looking to complete an associates degree. Depending on your area of study, students have the possibility of transferring to a bachelors program after two years. If you intend to transfer after two years, NCTC has majors available in several liberal arts, education and even equine science. As of 2010, tuition for in-district students is $45 per credit hour and $77 per credit hour for out-of-district students.
