Texas has six major public university systems. The largest of these is the University of Texas system, which has 15 campuses in cities such as El Paso, Austin, Arlington, Dallas and San Antonio. The university was established in 1883 with the Austin campus. The total student population among all of the campuses was more than 190,000 as of 2011. The total academic staff numbered slightly more than 17,000. The total endowment of the University of Texas system is $13 billion. The University of Texas is known for its health research centers, which comprise six of its campuses.
Texas A&M University is the second largest university system in Texas. The system is comprised of nine campuses, the largest of which is the flagship campus in College Station, Texas. The system also has campuses in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Texarkana and even Doha, Qatar---its international branch. The total student population of Texas A&M University was more than 100,000 as of 2011. The system also had an endowment of nearly $7 billion, as of 2011. There are also seven Texas government agencies that operate from Texas A&M university campuses, including Texas Engineering Experiment Station and Texas Transportation Institute.
The other four university systems in Texas are: Texas State University (seven campuses), Texas Tech University (three campuses), University of Houston (four campuses) and University of North Texas (three campuses). Additionally, there are nine law schools in Texas, including Texas Tech University School of Law, University of Houston Law Center and University of Texas School of Law. There are also more than 20 medical and health-related institutions in Texas, including University of Houston College of Pharmacy, University of North Texas Health Science Center and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
There are four public institutions in Texas not affiliated with any of the other public systems. These are Midwestern State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Southern University (an historically black college) and Texas Woman's University. Additionally, there are more than 40 private universities in Texas. Most of these private institutions are affiliated with particular religious denominations, such as Arlington Baptist College, Our Lady of the Lake University and Southern Methodist University. Texas also has a technical college system---Texas State Technical College---which has four campuses offering two-year technical degrees. Texas also has about 70 community and junior colleges.
