Small Texas Colleges

Many colleges in Texas offer student organizations, intramural sports and programs like Southwestern University's Paideia Program, which helps students make the connection from the classroom to the real world. Plus, low class sizes help small Texas colleges serve the educational needs of its students effectively.
  1. Texas College

    • Texas College, which boasts a student to teacher ratio of 1:20, offers 16 bachelor degrees and two associate of arts degrees. The school, which was founded in 1894 by a group of CME ministers, also offers an Alternative Certification Teacher Education program for those who have successfully completed a bachelor's degree. The college is located less than 100 miles from two metropolitan cities, Dallas and Shreveport. Classes are offered in both the fall and spring semesters; the school does not offer summer courses.

    Trinity University

    • With a student to teacher ratio of only 10:1, Trinity University prides itself as one of the state's small universities. Students may choose from 39 different majors and 52 minors. Majors range from economics to neuroscience. Trinity also offers several master degree options in such fields as accounting and health care administration. Trinity traditionally selects its top-tier students; the average high school GPA of its students is 3.5. Although small, the university successfully competes in athletics. It has won five NCAA championships in track and field since 2004.

    Southwestern University

    • Southwestern University, a liberal arts college with only 1,300 students, was the first institution of higher learning in Texas after it was established in 1840. Southwestern University offers 27 bachelor degree options ranging from computer science to environmental studies. The university has been known to only select those from the top portion of their high school class. The average class size is only 14 students; the student to faculty ratio is 10:1.
