Abilene, Texas Colleges

Abilene, Texas, is home to several colleges, with a heavy concentration of colleges with religious affiliations, including Baptist, Church of Christ and Methodist. However, Abilene, which is located about 180 miles from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, also has a radiology school and a career training college.

    • Abilene Christian University is a four-year, not-for-profit University affiliated with the Church of Christ. The school, which has an enrollment of about 5,000 (630 graduate students), was established in 1906. ACU has an all-Christian faculty, according to its website. The university offers 62 bachelor's programs across 100 study areas, 25 master's programs and one doctoral program. The ACU Wildcats, which compete in a variety of sports in the Lone Star Conference (NCAA Division II), boasted 62 national championship teams as of 2010.

    American Commercial College

    • This college has seven locations, including one in Abilene, throughout the state of Texas. According to the ACC website, the college's accelerated business diploma and certification programs allow students to be out of school and part of the workforce within seven months. Programs offered at the Abilene facility include administrative assistant, business accounting, data entry tech, medical coding/billing technician, medical assistant, health care administrative assistant and medical transcription.

    Hardin-Simmons University

    • Hardin-Simmons University is a private, not-for-profit four-year university affiliated with the Baptist faith. The school has an enrollment of 2,305 students (423 graduates) and offers six bachelor degree programs, seven master's (including a master's of divinity) and one doctoral program. The HSU Cowboys and Cowgirls compete in the American Southwest Conference (NCAA Division III).     Hendrick Medical Center School of Radiology

    • A part of the Hendrick Health System, the school of radiology began in 1953 and is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Classes, which begin in June and July, are limited in size. The school's goal, according to hendrickhealth.org, is "to provide our community and region with radiography graduates who professionally deliver high quality health services with competence, excellence, and compassion."

    McMurry University

    • McMurry University is a private, four-year, not-for-profit university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school was founded in 1923 and has an enrollment of nearly 1,500 students. The liberal arts college offers 41 bachelor's degrees spanning everything from fine arts to natural sciences to religion and pre-professional programs that include dentistry and law. McMurry athletics teams were known as the Indians until 2006, when trustees voted to forgo a nickname. McMurry competes in the American Southwest Conference (NCAA Division III) and fields teams in 19 sports.
