Austin, Texas Colleges

The city of Austin serves as the capital of Texas, and is the fourth-most populated metro area in the state. Geographically, the city is located in the center of Texas. According to Money Magazine, Austin is the second-best large city in which to live in America. Austin was also voted the "Greenest City" by MSN Online. All of these factors help make Austin popular with students, who have several different college options available.
  1. University of Texas at Austin

    • The University of Texas at Austin has the most enrolled students of any college in Texas, with approximately 50,000 students as of early 2010. As a university of this size, the University of Texas is able to combine traditional college learning with advanced graduate-level research facilities. The university has 17 schools and offers more than 100 separate undergraduate degree programs.

      The campus at the University of Texas is located only two miles from the state capitol building. This location provides excellent opportunities for students involved in public relations and government to obtain firsthand knowledge of the legislative process. The entire campus of the university covers 350 acres, and includes many residence halls and student activity centers.

    Austin Community College

    • Austin Community College is committed to offering value-priced education for students interested in the health care and business fields. The college offers both career certificates and two-year associate degrees. Several special programs are offered by the school, including Early College Start for high school seniors, and Distance Learned for students who are not in the immediate Austin area.

      According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the college offers some of the lowest-priced education in the state, with savings of close to $10,000 over two years compared to large state universities. In addition to its low cost, Austin Community College also offers convenience, with day, evening, weekend and online courses available.

    National American University

    • National American University is a community college focusing on the health care and business career paths. Founded in 2007, the college is one of the newest in Austin, and is located in the city's downtown area. Programs at the college are designed to be as flexible as possible, in order to accommodate students with other life obligations.

      At National American University, several degree programs are available. Two-year associate programs include business accounting, criminal justice and veterinary technology. For students looking for a four-year bachelor's degree, the college offers several business-related degrees, in addition to a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) program.

    Huston-Tellotson University

    • Huston-Tillotson University offers four-year bachelor's degree programs in the liberal arts and science fields. The university includes two distinct divisions--the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business and Technology. Each of these two divisions offers students a rounded education designed to completely prepare them for careers in their chosen fields.

      Two residence halls are available for students who wish to live on campus. The first, Beard-Burrows, is a men-only dorm, while the second, Allen-Frazier, is reserved only for women. The university believes that this separation helps reduce distractions and enables students to better focus on academics.
