The University of Texas at Austin, founded in 1883, is one of the largest public colleges in the United States. It has 21,000 faculty members and more than 50,000 students; the graduate school itself has more than 11,000 students. Students can study for their degrees in more than 170 areas. Its 17 schools include architecture, law, nursing, pharmacy, social work, fine arts and engineering. The university is one of the leading public research universities in the nation with 3,500 projects and an annual budget of more than $400 million.

Austin Community College is the largest two-year college in Texas. It has 40,000 students spread out over its seven branch campuses and nine learning centers. The college offers more than 235 certificate and degree programs in apprenticeships and vocational programs as well as general studies for students transferring to a four-year university. The school's website notes it is the primary trainer and re-trainer of employees in the Austin area.

St. Edward's University was founded in 1885 by the Rev. Edward Sorin, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who also founded the University of Notre Dame. The Catholic university is one of the best in the nation. It won a place on "U.S. News & World Report's" list of best American colleges and universities for seven consecutive years. It has an extensive graduate program which offers advanced degrees in a number of fields including counseling, teaching, business administration and digital media management. It has a special program for working adults who wish to earn degrees. The university has more than 5,000 students.

Huston-Tillotson University is a historically black university that is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ and the United Negro College Fund. Founded in 1875, the university today accepts students of all faiths, races and nationalities. It is a small co-educational college with less than 1,000 students. The university offers degrees in business, the humanities, education, social and natural sciences and technology.
