Founded in 1883, the University of Texas at Austin has grown into one of the largest public universities in the country, serving more than 50,000 students each year with 17 colleges and schools and 21,000 faculty and staff members. Prospective students may begin with a bachelor degree program in many arts and sciences programs, including architecture, education, business, communication, and more. Later they may choose to attend the graduate school, pharmacy school or law school. The university is widely known for its Longhorns sports programs, but it also has a broad performing arts presence. Admissions decisions are based on high school curriculum, college entrance exam scores and a written essay. Recommendation letters may be helpful, but they are not required.
