The Houston Community College system maintains campuses and training centers throughout the Houston metropolitan area, including Houston Independent School District, Stafford and Missouri City Municipal School Districts, Katy, Spring Branch, Alief and North Forest Independent School Districts. An estimated 1.3 million students have studied at Houston Community College campuses between 1971, when the system was founded, and 2010.
Students have the option to pursue academic studies or job training, or participate in continuing education programs. The Houston Community College system allows you to study in traditional academic fields to help you transfer to a four- year university. In addition, Houston Community College provides degrees and certificates in 70 vocations, corporate training programs and continuing education for adults.

The Lone Star College system is a network of two-year community colleges that serve students in the Houston area who wish to pursue technical or academic skills. According to Lone Star College, you can complete a number of "technical programs, leading to associate degrees and certificates, designed to develop marketable skills and support economic development." Specific technical training is earned through the associate degree of applied sciences program. Through Lone Star College you can gain skills training in a number of fields.
If you prefer to pursue academic studies, you can complete academic course work in either the arts or sciences. This course of study is earned through the associate degree program. This academic work may be applied toward a four-year degree upon transferring to a university.

Alvin Community College is located near Houston, Texas, in Brazoria County and provides several opportunities for you to complete skills training, begin your academic course work, or pursue adult education programs. For skills training, the range of course offerings at Alvin Community College include the opportunity to complete "one- and two-year technical programs that prepare graduates to enter business or industry with marketable skills."
In addition, Alvin Community College offers classes "in the arts and sciences for those pursuing associate degrees or planning to transfer to a senior institution." Alvin also provides continuing adult education to maintain your skills or to complete adult basic education.
