Temple College is a public, two-year institution with three academic campuses within the city limits of Temple. The school is home to nearly 4,800 for-credit students, less than 40 percent of which take courses full-time, explains the college website. The school offers degree and certificate programs in management, child development, computer-aided drafting, computer information systems, criminal justice, biotechnology, dental hygiene, nursing, radiography and respiratory therapy. Students can transfer to Franklin University or Tarleton State University to complete a bachelor's degree through the college's articulation program, which guarantees the university will honor credits earned at Temple. Located in Belton, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor is approximately nine miles from Temple. The Baptist Church founded the school in 1845. Nursing is the most popular major among the university's 2,500 undergraduate students. The school also grants bachelor's and master's degrees in fields like biology, accounting, exercise science, Christian studies and social work. Regular chapel attendance is mandatory, and all students must complete six credits in religious studies to graduate. Internships are available in many majors as well as study abroad opportunities in five countries. The school sponsors 12 intercollegiate sports teams and is home to more than 50 student groups and organizations.

A unit of Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University at Central Texas is a public, four-year university about 27 miles from Temple in the town of Killeen. The school's bachelor's and master's programs feature degrees in English, finance, human resources, aviation science, counseling and mathematics. The university fields intramural sports teams, and there are academic advising and career counseling for all students.
