Chattanooga State Community College, opened in 1965, calls itself the most comprehensive community college in Tennessee. The college offers a 76-credit associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene. The dental hygiene curriculum includes general education courses, sciences, and dental hygiene courses, and is accredited by the American Dental Association.

East Tennessee State University enrolls more than 11,000 students in 209 academic programs leading to undergraduate, graduate and specialist degrees. The university offers a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene and an online degree completion program. Dental hygiene students gain clinical experience in the university's 22-unit clinic, which features x-ray machines, x-ray processing facilities, infection control area and classroom and laboratory facilities.

Roane State Community College has nine locations offering career preparation programs, including degrees in 13 health science programs. The associate of applied science in dental hygiene requires 78 credit hours in general studies, sciences, dental sciences and clinical experience. Students work directly with patients in the Roane State Community Dental Clinic, which provides free dental services to low-income adults.
