Ontario Dental Hygiene Schools

Job prospects for dental hygienists in Toronto and other parts of Ontario are likely to grow by more than 14 percent through 2018, according to the Canadian government. To become a dental hygienist, a post-secondary degree from a school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada is required. The American Dental Association also recognizes such programs, qualifying graduates for employment in the United States.

Students gain experience in the school's simulated laboratory settings as well as by working on patients in community healthcare centers.     Canadian National Institute of Health

    • Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, the Canadian National Institute of Health is located in Ottawa. To qualify for the college's 18-month dental hygiene program, applicants must pass an admissions test and have previous secondary-level course experience in English, mathematics, biology and chemistry or physics. Once admitted, students spend three semesters completing the required coursework, which includes orthodontics, health promotion, computer science, radiography, periodontics, infection control, dental materials and histology. Students complete two clinical internships prior to graduation.

    • The Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene is based in Mississauga and accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. Entry into the school's dental hygiene program requires a written examination and secondary-level course experience in English and biology. Chemistry is also highly suggested, but not required. The program spans three 22-week semesters. Students study psychology, biology, pain control, radiology, nutrition, tooth morphology, periodontics, ethics and professionalism.
