Dental Hygiene Schools in Indiana

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development predicts that the demand for dental hygienists in the state will increase by more than 26 percent from 2006 through 2016. A dental hygiene license in the state of Indiana requires the completion of a post-secondary degree program. A small number of schools in Indiana offer such programs, preparing students for the state licensing exams through a combination of classroom study and hands-on practice with real patients in clinical settings.

    • Indiana University School of Dentistry is a public institution located in Indianapolis. The college offers an Associate of Science degree in dental hygiene. To qualify for admission to the one-year program, students must first complete one year of college-level coursework at an accredited college in subjects such as anatomy, chemistry, psychology, sociology and public speaking. Students in the program participate in clinical internships both on campus at the school's dental clinics and in facilities throughout the Indianapolis area. Also offered is a Bachelor of Science degree in public health dental hygiene. This program is reserved for students who already have an associate degree in dental hygiene and a valid license to work in the field from the state. To complete the baccalaureate program, students participate in clinical internships and take courses related to community health care and statistics.

    University of Southern Indiana

    • Located in Evansville, public University of Southern Indiana serves as home to more than 10,500 undergraduate and graduate students. The college grants a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. Admission to the program requires two years of previous undergraduate coursework in areas such as chemistry, anatomy, microbiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, bio-statistics, nutrition and algebra. Most students complete the prerequisites at the university, but the school will accept students who transfer from other accredited institutions. The program admits 24 students per year, which translates to roughly 17 percent of those who apply, according to the university's website. Those admitted spend two years completing the professional courses for the program, which include radiology, preventative care, periodontics and pain management. Four clinical rotations are required for graduation, the majority of which take place on campus in the university's clinic.

    Indiana University Northwest

    • Home to more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students, Indiana University Northwest is a public institution in Gary. The college offers an Associate of Science degree in dental hygiene. The first year of prerequisite coursework is completable at any accredited college and involves classes in English, chemistry, psychology, sociology, communications and anatomy and physiology. Once admitted, students spend the second year of the program in three dental hygiene clinical internships as well as three radiology internships, during which students gain practice administering dental X-rays. Courses required in the professional phase of the program include pharmacology, preventive dentistry, histology, pathology, dental materials, dental education, periodontics, ethics and practice management.
