The Indiana University School of Dentistry offers an associate's (full-time, two years) or bachelor's degree (part-time, up to four years) in dental hygiene. Coursework includes Periodontics, Dental Materials, Community Dental Health, Pain Management, Preventative Dentistry, Dental Emergencies and Radiology Clinic. Students can join on-campus dental fraternities (open to both men and women) and chapters of national organizations such as the American Dental Hygienists Association, American Student Dental Association, Indiana Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry. Applicants must submit a high school diploma or GED, have completed eight hours of observation at two dental practices and have word processing and computer skills.

Ivy Tech Community College offers an associate's of science degree in dental hygiene, where students undertake coursework such as Fundamentals of Dental Hygiene, Preventive Dentistry, Dental Anatomy, Pain Management, Pharmacology and Head and Neck Anatomy. A high school diploma or GED is not required. Students have access to libraries, student government, honor societies and clubs, as well as financial aid.

At the University of Southern Indiana, the dental hygiene program falls under the College of Nursing and Health Professions department. Students can earn a four-year bachelor's degree in dental hygiene, with required coursework such as Medical Terminology for Health Professions, Pharmacology, Biostatistics, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Microbiology and Principles and Applications in Nutrition. The school combines classroom learning with on-campus clinical laboratories. Only 24 students are admitted to the program per year; the school claims a 100 percent success rate for the state licensure exam.
