Utah Dental Hygiene Schools

Dental hygienists clean, diagnose, repair and treat specific dental conditions to prevent various diseases and enhance appearance. Some tasks that hygienists complete are testing for gum disease, noting conditions and treatments, preparing lab tests, taking X-rays and assisting dentists during their procedures. You need to attend a college that offers the degree program to be qualified for this career path.
  1. AmeriTech College

    • AmeriTech College has two campuses, located in Draper and Provo. They offer a 38-week program for dental assistants to assist a dentist or hygienist. The program is 34 credit hours and has 30 weeks of classroom learning and training and an eight-week externship. The program focuses on theory, pre-clinical practice and a laboratory portion.

    Dixie State College of Utah

    • Dixie State College of Utah is located in the small city of St. George. It offers an associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene. Students learn theory and clinical skills including procedures and anesthesia. Students are eligible to take the national board exam at the end of the course. The program lasts for two years and only 20 students are accepted each year.

    Salt Lake Community College

    • Salt Lake Community College offers a two-year American Dental Association program. Students learn academic and clinical sills. They must be admitted to the school through the enrollment services at the main campus. The dental program requires a minimum of 90 course hours.

    Utah Valley University

    • Utah Valley University offers a two-year associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and teaches students skills including topical fluoride application, fissure and pit sealant, radiography and administration of local anesthetics. Only 14 students are admitted to the program every year. The two-year program costs approximately $21,100 for all fees and tuition.

    Weber State University

    • Weber State University offers an associate of science and bachelor of science in dental hygiene. It is Utah's only bachelor's program in dental hygiene. The program lasts three years overall, with the first year focusing on prerequisites and the later two focusing on the skills necessary to enter in the career field of dental hygiene. If a student wants to obtain her bachelor's degree, an optional fourth year is available.
