The state of Texas provides hundreds of colleges and universities for both in- and out-of-state residents. As with any state, some of these schools are private while others are public. Some have higher tuition costs than others. No matter the price or status, you'll find that Texas colleges and universities offer a great variety of majors and specialty programs.   1. Baylor University

    • Baylor University is private, co-educational college located in Waco, Texas. As of fall 2010, this Baptist institution has an enrollment of about 15,000 students. Students can live on campus and the school requires freshman to do so for their first year. Tuition begins at $28,000 and students can choose from more than 140 majors.

    Texas A&M University

    • This public school is in the southeast corner of the state and is home to nearly 50,000 students from across the state and world. It's recognized for its solid academic programs and affordable tuition ($9,000 per year as of August 2010). It also provides a wide range of majors and specialized tracks, including pre-medicine, pre-law and pre-veterinarian.

    Western Texas College

    • With tuition of just under $3,000 a year (as of August 2010) and a welcoming campus, Western Texas has been a good choice for many. This college also makes transferring your credits to and from other colleges and universities easy. Western Texas College is a great steppingstone to another college, should you choose to relocate, switch your major or seek to obtain certain college credits for another university.

    University of Texas-Austin

    • The University of Texas in Austin is a highly revered public school founded in 1883. According to DiplomaGuide.com, this particular university is ranked 44th by "U.S. News and World Report" and considered one of the "public ivy" schools in the nation. Many majors are available, including fine arts, communication, education, engineering, business and medicine. As of August 2010, approximately 40,000 students attend the University of Texas-Austin and tuition is just under $9,000 for in-state students.
