North Texas Colleges

There are at least six major colleges and several more smaller colleges and junior colleges scattered throughout the north Texas region alone. Thus, the following list is not all-inclusive. With this kind of selection, you'll want to carefully compare the programs offered and the school personalities before applying.
  1. University of North Texas

    • UNT is located in Denton, Texas, which is less than an hour's drive north of Dallas and Fort Worth. Forbes Magazine ranked the school at 508 among America's best colleges in 2008. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the school is widely recognized for its innovative and growing sciences programs, particularly in the area of alternative energy, and for its fine art, particularly in jazz.

    Texas Tech

    • Lubbock Texas is home to Texas Tech University. Tech's reputation is built upon a strong teaching foundation and public research according to Campus Explorer. As a result, it is widely thought of as the teachers' college. As of 2008, Forbes Magazine ranked it as number 385 of America's Best Colleges. It is a public, co-educational facility.

    Texas Women's University

    • Another school located in Denton, Texas, Texas Women's University was not ranked by Forbes. It has a strong reputation as a health sciences college with particular emphasis on nursing. Campus Explorer indicates this school has one of the largest nursing programs in the world. They also work extensively in the area of research, such as improving practices and technology within the health care setting. Although it does serve primarily female students, this public school is also open to male students.

    Texas Christian University

    • Nestled in the civic area of Fort Worth, Texas, Campus Explorer says TCU focuses on developing leadership skills in its students regardless of their degree plan. One of the big draws to this private university is the tremendous opportunity students gain to study abroad. Forbes ranked it 513 of America's Best Schools.

    Southern Methodist University

    • SMU sits in the middle of Dallas, Texas. This private school has a long tradition of developing a sense of community involvement and service among its students. According to Campus Explorer, it is also strong on business and global issues. Compared to the other schools on this list, it ranks high on the Forbes list at number 186.

    Baylor

    • Situated just south of the Dallas/Fort Worth area in a town called Waco, Baylor University is considered particularly strong in the areas of theology, philosophy, business and law. A private, strongly Baptist co-educational university, the school was ranked 352 on Forbes' list of America's Best Schools.
