Small D1 Colleges

Division 1 colleges are colleges that offer the most amount of sports, at the highest level of competition. Division 1 colleges must feature at least 14 sports, with at least two for each gender, as well as offer a minimum amount of financial aid. As of 2010, 335 colleges are division 1 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, with 66 percent being public and 34 percent being private. While many of the largest colleges in America are division 1, a multitude of colleges in the division still remain small in campus size with enrollments under 15,000 students.
  1. North Dakota State University

    • North Dakota State University has an enrollment of 14,407 students and 6,176 employees, as of 2011. Men's sports offered at the college include football, baseball, basketball, cross country, wrestling, track and field and golf. Women's sports at NDSU include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field and volleyball. The nickname of NDSU athletic teams are the Bison and the college is located in the city of Fargo, North Dakota.

    University of Northern Colorado

    • The University of Northern Colorado had an enrollment of 9,973 undergraduate and 2,175 graduate students in the fall semester of 2009. The college became division 1 in 2006 and played their inaugural season in the Big Sky Athletic Conference. Men's sports at Northern Colorado include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track, tennis, track and field and wrestling. Women's sports at the college include basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball. University of Northern Colorado teams are nicknamed the Bears and the college is located in Greeley, Colorado.

    University of South Dakota

    • The University of South Dakota was founded in 1862 and is South Dakota's oldest university. Enrollment at USD was 10,151 students, as of the fall of 2010, and faculty members totaled 426. Men's sports at the college include basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, as well as track and field. Women's sports offered at USD include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The team name of the University of South Dakota is the Coyotes and the college is located in Vermillion, South Dakota.

    The University of Tulsa

    • The University of Tulsa was founded in 1894 and is a private institution. Enrollment at TU is 4,187 students, as of 2011, and the total full-time faculty employed is 306, as of 2011. Men's sports offered at TU include basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, track and field and tennis. Women's sports offered at the college include basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, track and field and volleyball. The team name of The University of Tulsa is the Golden Hurricane and the college is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
