Small California Colleges

California plays host to dozens of two-year colleges, four-year colleges and specialty schools. They range in size from the massive University of California and California State systems to institutions with less than 500 students. Several four-year colleges with less than 5,000 students are particularly worthy of note.
  1. Golden Gate University

    • California's fourth-oldest university is situated in the heart of San Francisco and specializes in practical course offerings in law, information technology and various aspects of business management as well as psychology and health services. Its School of Taxation is a highlight.

    Mills College

    • Mills College is an independent liberal arts college for women only (graduate courses include men). Situated in the Oakland hills, Mills has consistently been listed as one of the top-ranked colleges in all of the U.S. Popular majors include English, biology and child development.

    Occidental College

    • Occidental College is an acclaimed liberal arts college located near downtown Los Angeles. One unique aspect of its program is that it requires students to reside on campus for the first three years; only seniors are permitted to utilize off-campus housing.

    Pomona College

    • Pomona College, located in southern California at the foot of the striking San Gabriel Mountains, is a highly regarded liberal arts school--in fact, the Fiske Guide to Colleges calls Pomona "the best liberal arts college in the West." The curriculum is rigorous but flexible, with a unique Breadth of Study requirement that assures a broad exposure to many disciplines.

    • A small private university in Southern California, the University of the Redlands was founded as a Baptist college but has since become an independent liberal arts school. It offers business and teaching curricula as well.

    Whittier College

    • Whittier College is a liberal arts school based in Orange County. It was founded by Quakers but remains a secular, independent college. In addition to its solid liberal arts curriculum, students may design and pursue their own major.
