Small Universities in Texas

Although Texas is home to the fifth- and seventh-largest public universities in the United States, the state also has many universities with relatively small enrollments, some of which fall under The University of Texas (51,032 students in Fall 2009) and the Texas A&M University (48,885) systems. Others fall under the Texas State or Texas Tech university systems.
  1. Angelo State University

    • Located in San Angelo, ASU is part of the Texas Tech University System. Enrollment as of February 2010 was about 6,400. The university offers 40 undergraduate and 23 graduate majors, including a doctorate in physical therapy. The school also offers an associate's degree program in applied science in nursing. In athletics, the Angelo State Rams and Rambelles compete in NCAA Division II and are members of the Lone Star Conference.

    Lamar University

    • Located in Beaumont, Lamar is part of the Texas State University System and had as of February 2010 an enrollment of about 11,000. The university offers approximately 150 programs, including bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees. Lamar is home to the Mary and John Gray Library, an eight-story facility that houses the special collections as well as the Lamar University Archives. In athletics, the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals compete in NCAA Division II as part of the Southland Conference.

    Sul Ross State University

    • Located in the Davis Mountains in Alpine, Sul Ross is part of the Texas State University System and has an enrollment of about 2,000 students. The university includes a 468-acre working ranch utilized by students in the animal science programs. While it offers a variety of sports, Sul Ross is the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and has had several team members go on to become world rodeo world champions.

    Texas A&M University-Central Texas

    • Located in Killeen, which is home to Fort Hood, the university is one of the state's youngest. It was established in 1999 as part of Tarleton State University and became a stand-alone campus 10 years later in the A&M system. The school has an enrollment of about 1,200 and offers 38 undergraduate and 26 graduate degrees in 26 areas. Texas A&M University-Central Texas is a member of GoArmyEd, which assists active-duty soldiers through distance learning.

    Texas A&M University-Texarkana

    • Located in Texarkana, Texas, the university is part of the Texas A&M system and had about 1,550 students, including 569 graduate students, as of February 2010. The university offers 20 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs. It began in 1971 as East Texas State University and became a member of the A&M system in 1996.

    The University of Texas at Tyler

    • Located in Tyler, UT-Tyler is part of The University of Texas system and had about 6,150 students in February 2010. The university offers 90 academic programs that include undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees. In athletics, the Patriots compete in the NCAA Division II American Southwest Conference. The school also includes campuses in Longview and Palestine.
