The College of New Jersey offers a program specifically designed to prepare students for a life teaching the blind and visually impaired. It is the only such program available at a New Jersey college or university.
There are several certification options. If you are a new college student already certified in another discipline or a college graduate wishing to become a teacher, the College of New Jersey has a certification program to meet your needs.
During the program, students will learn Braille literacy, assertive technology, collaboration and teaming, and strategies to help blind/visually impaired students function independently in a general education setting. The program includes many hours of interaction with blind and visually impaired children and adults.

Teacher’s College is America’s oldest and largest graduate school of education. It offers an M.A. and M.Ed degree in blindness and visual impairment. Each student will work with a faculty adviser to design a program that meets interests and certification needs. A teacher’s certificate in blindness and visual impairment has several different concentrations: early childhood education, childhood education and adolescence education. In addition to classwork, students will be required to complete supervised practice and a comprehensive final examination.

Hunter College is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system, and one of the oldest public colleges in the country. It offers several graduate programs for students planning to teach children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. The first option culminates in a master’s degree and a New York State certificate as a teacher of the visually impaired. The second option is an advanced certificate program for those who already have a master’s degree in special education. Both programs are designed so that students can attend full time or part time, depending on their needs.
