Cost Comparison of Texas Universities

The state of Texas offers dozens of colleges from which to choose. Public universities include the Texas A&M system, the University of Texas system and the Texas State University system. Numerous private institutions are also available and vary widely in cost. State schools are typically less expensive than private colleges and universities, although the tuition to different colleges in the state system can vary significantly. Other than tuition, prospective students must also consider mandatory fees and the cost of living.
  1. Texas A&M

    • The Texas A&M University system has 11 different campuses and offers some of the lowest tuition rates in the state. In 2010-2011, students attending Texas A&M University at College Station full time were charged $2118.60 per semester. Full-time students attending the Texas A&M campus at Prairie View were charged $2,030.76 per semester, while those attending the Commerce campus were charged $2,501.16.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas system includes the University of Texas at Austin and several other campuses, including locations in Dallas, Arlington, El Paso and Brownsville. In 2010-2011, the tuition cost for attending the Austin campus full time was $4,748 to $4,911 per semester, depending upon the student's major. Students at the Brownsville campus paid $1,697.64 for tuition each semester; those attending the the El Paso campus paid $2,696.56 for full-time tuition in that same academic year.

    Texas State University

    • Texas State University has four campuses, located in Lamar, Sam Houston, Sul Ross and San Marcos. During the 2010-2011 school year, Lamar University resident students were charged $1,896 per semester for full-time tuition, Sam Houston full-time students were charged $2,697 per semester, Sul Ross students were charged $1,536 per semester for full-time tuition, and San Marcos students paid $2,292 for their full-time tuition.

    Private Four-Year Colleges and Universities

    • The cost to attend a private institution in the state of Texas varies significantly depending upon the school. Private institutions charge the same rates for Texas residents and non-residents. In 2010-2011, Rice University, one of the more expensive private schools in Texas, charged undergraduate students $33,120 per year to attend full time. On the lower end of the scale, Baylor University only charged students $13,483 to attend full time during that same academic year.
