Pre-Med Colleges in Virginia

Several of Virginia's liberal arts colleges and smaller universities offer pre-medicine and pre-health programs that prepare undergraduates for further study and eventual careers in a variety of medicine and health fields. At these smaller schools, students can take advantage of small class sizes and closer student-teacher relationships to gain the experience and advising necessary to begin a medical career path. These colleges often offer laboratory research and clinical internship opportunities for students, as well as academic, test-preparation and medical school application advising. In 2010, US News and World Report ranked two Virginia colleges offering pre-medicine programs among the nation's top 30 liberal arts colleges.

  1. Washington and Lee University Health Professions Department

    • Washington and Lee University is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1749. The college's Health Professions department is designed to prepare students for a variety of academic and career paths within the health professions, including medical school and graduate study in public health. The department provides students with extensive advising about academic scheduling, career planning, and medical school admissions exam and application preparation. The department's partnership with St. Andrews University in Scotland allows students studying in the department to complete a productive semester abroad. Washington and Lee University tied for 14th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    University of Richmond Pre-Health Studies Program

    • The University of Richmond is a private, primarily undergraduate liberal arts university that was founded in 1830. The university's Pre-Health Studies Program offers extensive advising, MCAT preparation, clinical internship opportunities and a minor in medical humanities. 85 percent of the university's pre-health graduates gain acceptance to medical school in their first year of application. The University of Richmond tied for 30th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of liberal arts colleges.

    Hollins University Pre-Medicine

    • Hollins University is a private, primarily undergraduate university that was founded in 1842. Though its graduate programs accept men, the undergraduate college remains all-female. Students in Hollins University's pre-medicine program can take advantage of small class sizes, laboratory research opportunities, January term internship opportunities and extensive academic and career advising. Most pre-med students at Hollins complete independent research projects in their senior year.
