Pre-Med Colleges in Hawaii

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, about 213 students from the state of Hawaii applied to medical school in 2009, a 9.2 percent increase from 2008, when 195 students applied. Many--although by no means all--of these students take pre-med courses to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the sciences and perhaps their medical school applications as well. Hawaii has a number of universities that offer some kind of premedical school curriculum or program.
  1. The University of Hawaii System

    • Two campuses in the University of Hawaii system---Hilo on the Big Island and the main campus of Manoa on Oahu---offer premedical courses to students interested in attending medical school. Students in the biology program in Hilo can choose to pursue a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science, with two tracks within each program available: the "Cell and Molecular Track" and the "Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology Track," both of which provide appropriate preparation for students entering medical school. The Manoa campus offers a few more options, including majors in cell and molecular biology and organismic biology. Manoa---where the University of Hawaii Medical School is also located---also has a robust support system with its Pre-Medical Association, a student organization that offers peer mentoring, networking opportunities, volunteer programs and community service events.

    Brigham Young University Hawaii

    • Brigham Young University Hawaii is a branch campus of the Utah-based Brigham Young University, which is managed by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints' LDS Church Educational System. BYU-Hawaii is located in Laie, about 35 miles north of Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The university does not have a premedical major, but it does provide a pre-professional program jointly administered by the departments of Biology and Biochemistry & Physical Science. The program includes advisement with a pre-professional faculty advisor and an 18-hour "Pre-Professional Core" curriculum.

    Hawaii Pacific University

    • Located on Oahu, Hawaii Pacific University is a four-year, private university with three campuses throughout the islands. The Pre-Medical Studies program provides students with two baccalaureate options: a bachelor of science in biochemistry or in biology. In either case, students participate in a rigorous, science-based curriculum designed to maximize their success in completing professional entrance examinations, including the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Students have access to advisors well-versed in pre-health professional education, admissions exams and medical school studies. The university boasts a chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-health professional national honor society.
