Colleges & Universities in Houston

Houston is one of the only cities in Texas that has its own public university system. The University of Houston has four different colleges within the city. In addition, the University of Texas has its Health Sciences Center in Houston. Houston also has its own community college district with six different campuses throughout the city, and one of the top private universities in the country.
  1. University of Houston

    • All four campuses that compose the University of Houston are located within the city limits. Together they educate more than 37,000 students per year, and offer more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located at 4800 Calhoun Road. There is also the Clearlake, Downtown and Victoria campuses. Each has its own admissions process and degree programs. All four offer bachelor's and graduate degrees in a variety of fields including media, business, education, engineering and biology.

    University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

    • The Houston campus is one of six health science or medical colleges in the University of Texas system. The Houston campus offers a variety of bachelor's, master's and doctorate programs in health-related fields including nursing, public health, doctor of medicine, doctor of dental surgery, medical physics, developmental biology, genetics and toxicology. The only bachelor program offered at this campus is nursing.

    Houston Community College

    • The Houston Community College system is divided into six different campuses within the city limits -- Central, Coleman, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. All of them offer a variety of two-year, associate's degree programs ranging from dance to public relations. Admitted students are required to provide an official ACT or SAT score. To enroll in a degree program, a student most have completed high school.

    Rice University

    • Rice University is one of the most competitive colleges in the country, and only admitted 22 percent of its applicants in 2010. The average GPA for incoming students during that year was 3.77. The university offers a variety of degree programs including German and Slavic studies, visual arts, music composition and ecology and evolutionary biology. Its most popular degrees programs include economics, electrical and computer engineering, English, computer science, architecture, kinesiology and psychology.
