Indianapolis Universities & Colleges

Founded in 1821, the city of Indianapolis received its name when the founders combined the state name with the Greek word "polis," which means "city." In addition to being the state capital, Indianapolis is home to 138 colleges and universities, as of 2011. These institutions of higher learning include technical and vocational schools and community colleges that offer two-year degrees and certificates.
  1. Butler University

    • Located 5 miles from downtown Indianapolis, Butler University is situated on 290 acres and was founded in 1855 by attorney and abolitionist Ovid Butler. The private school offers more than 65 majors and boasts a 96 percent job placement rate for its graduates, which includes a 100 percent job placement rate for graduates of its education and pharmacy programs. Enrollment figures include 4,051 undergraduate and 4,640 graduate students pursuing degrees from six academic colleges, including fine arts, business and communication, as of 2011.

    Marian University

    • Founded as Marian College in 1936, this Catholic school gained university status and changed its name to Marian University in 2009. The private school is based on the Franciscan values of responsible stewardship, peace and justice, individual dignity and reconciliation. Marian University offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs in 36 majors and 37 minors and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the National Council for Teacher Education. Located 10 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, Marian University touts its peaceful campus setting.

    University of Indianapolis

    • The University of Indianapolis is a private school that was founded in 1902 and offers 82 undergraduate and 22 graduate-degree programs. Enrollment as of 2011 included about 3,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students. The school offers 20 intercollegiate athletic programs -- including football, baseball, men's and women's swimming, and men's and women's golf -- that compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II level. UI is one of the few institutions of higher learning that own a campus in another country. The University of Indianapolis-Athens is located in Greece near the historic Syntagma Square.

    Ivy Tech Community College

    • Ivy Tech Community College operates 23 campuses throughout the state of Indiana, including its Central Indiana campus in Indianapolis. The Central Indiana campus was instituted in 1969 and, as of 2011, enrolls approximately 15,000 students per semester. Ivy Tech is the largest single-accreditation college in the nation, with an estimated student enrollment of 200,000 per academic year. The public school offers associate's degrees and four-year college transfer programs in a variety of disciplines, including business administration, criminal justice, interior design and education.
