Central Florida Colleges & Universities

Florida hosts many colleges and universities, and the central part of the state is no exception. The area's academic offerings attract students from all over the country thanks to warm temperatures and energetic student bodies. The region's proximity to other Florida universities -- both toward the north and the south -- make attending college in Florida a social experience.
  1. University of Central Florida

    • The University of Central Florida is one of the largest universities in the entire state based on enrollment, and according to the school's Web site is the second-largest university in America as of February 2011. The school offers more than 225 degree options in 12 colleges and 11 satellite campuses. Students can study a host of subjects from classical literature to astrophysics to medicine.

    Valencia Community College

    • Valencia Community College is a multi-campus college in Orlando founded in 1967 and is home to more than 30,000 students every year. There are a total of four campuses all of which are located in the central Florida communities of Orange and Osceola counties. Students frequently commute to classes, but many students choose to live in one of the many apartments that have opened in recent years near the campuses.

    Florida Christian University

    • Florida Christian University of Kissimmee is an offshoot of the Independent Christian Church. Students at Florida Christian are instructed nearly entirely in a conservative Christian education that trains people of all ages for careers either as preachers, missionaries or teachers. The school follows conservative social tenets and often separates men and women. The school also forbids alcohol in all settings.

    University of Tampa

    • The University of Tampa comes complete with more than 100 degrees available in programs that include accounting, marketing, nursing and business administration. A school interested in helping students who may need more academic assistance, the on-campus Academic Center for Excellence offers free tutoring by students who've passed a competency exam in their tutoring area. The University of Tampa also offers a year-round freshman orientation program that puts new students in small groups to get a better feel for the college experience.
