Established in 1965, Florida International University is in Miami and has more than 31,000 undergraduate students. Admission to the college is very competitive; only one-third of those who apply receive an invitation to attend the school, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The university's architecture program culminates in master's degree rather than a bachelor's though students can apply for the program while still in high school. For such students, the program usually requires five or six years of study to complete, while students who already have a bachelor's degree can finish the program in two to three years. All students in the program have an opportunity to spend one year in Genoa, Italy studying design. Specialized scholarships are available for Florida International architectural students
