Colleges in Florida for Meteorology

A small number of colleges and universities in Florida offer degree programs in atmospheric sciences, which are meant to prepare students to work in the field of meteorology, whether for the federal government, a broadcasting company or another industry. These colleges can be private or public institutions and are spread throughout the state. They offer a number of opportunities for student development outside the classroom through internships, cooperative work positions and study abroad.
  1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

    • Located in Daytona Beach, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is a private institution with more than 4,600 undergraduate students. The school offers a bachelor of science degree in meteorology, which allows students to specialize in one of four areas: flight weather, commercial weather, media weather and research. The university offers a state-of-the-art facility that allows students to simulate weather phenomena such as hurricanes and tornadoes. The school also offers paid cooperative positions and unpaid internships to students in meteorology, as well as study-abroad programs in more than 20 countries.

    University of Miami

    • In 2010, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the University of Miami 50th of all universities in the U.S. With more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the private school is situated in Coral Gables, about six miles south of Miami. Admission to the university is selective; less than 40 percent of those who apply receive an invitation to attend the school, reports the 2009 Barron's "Profiles of American Colleges." The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences grants both bachelor's and master's degrees in meteorology. Internships are available for undergraduates, and summer research fellowships are awarded to graduate students each year.
