List of Universities in Florida

Florida has more than 3,000 public and private colleges and universities to choose from. Besides the warm temperatures, students are drawn by the topography of the state. Its proximity to ports has led to numerous internships aboard cruise ships, and its coral reefs provide recreation and the opportunity to study marine biology. When considering this state for higher education, you are not short of options.
  1. University of Miami

    • Located in Coral Gables, Florida, the University of Miami has more than 15,000 students and offers more than 180 programs. The main campus is spread across 225 acres. The school was established in 1925 and as of 2011, full-time tuition hovers just over $35,000. More than three-quarters of undergraduate classes have 25 students or less, and some of the sports teams include basketball, soccer and cross-country track. Study-abroad programs include semesters in the Galapagos Islands and in Prague.

    University of Florida

    • Founded in 1853, the University of Florida is the oldest university in the state. UF is located in Gainesville and its residence halls house approximately 7,500 students. There are five family housing villages and they are home to more than 1,000 graduate students. The school's enrollment stands at more than 50,000 students and as of 2011, the entering undergraduate class has an average SAT score of 1963. The school offers more than 60 sports, including archery.

    Florida International University

    • Florida International University has an enrollment of more than 40,000 students and offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate degrees. The school was founded in 1969. On-campus dining options include a coffee shop, Moe's and Papa John's. There are five residence halls on campus, housing approximately 3000 students. There are both free and paid campus shuttles, and the campus is accessible via the Miami-Dade County transit system. FIU is also home to the Frost Art Museum.

    St. Thomas University

    • St. Thomas University was founded in 1961 as Biscayne College, with its roots tracing to the Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba. This is a Catholic institution that has been sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami since 1988. It features baseball, tennis and golf teams and also offers summer sports camps. As of 2011, the school's enrollment is approximately 2,700 students and the average financial aid package totals approximately $16,000. The school's colors are navy, Columbia blue and burgundy.
