University of Ia?i is Romania's oldest university, dating back to 1860. More than 38,000 students attend the university, studying subjects in 16 faculties such as biology, computer science, orthodox theology and law. Doctoral degrees are offered in 23 fields. The Center for European Integration promotes involvement with the rest of Europe and creating an education system consistent with European standards. Romanian students are graded on a scale of one to 10, where a six or below is failure.

The University of Bucharest is located in Romania's capital city and considered the country's premiere place of higher education. Among the 14 departments are journalism, geology, Roman Catholic theology, physics and law. Babe?-Bolyai University requires that international students be first accepted by the country's Ministry of Education. Scholarships are available that exempt tuition fees and provide free housing. Students can receive bachelor's, master's or Ph.D. degrees and many courses are offered in Romanian, Hungarian, German and English. Areas of study include geography, environmental sciences, history and business management. Multiple languages are taught including Romanian, Hungarian, Norwegian, Ukrainian and Chinese.
