List of Universities in Romania

Romania, an Eastern European country of 22.2 million people, has come a long way since its days as a Soviet state. Today, 93 percent of students are enrolled in primary school and 74 percent continue on to secondary school. Romania has an overall 97.3 percent literacy rate. The higher education system is divided among universities, colleges and academies; each institution is autonomous and can create its own rules, curriculum and educational standards. Three levels of study yield a diploma or doctorate.

    • University of Ia?i is Romania's oldest university, dating back to 1860. More than 38,000 students attend the university, studying subjects in 16 faculties such as biology, computer science, orthodox theology and law. Doctoral degrees are offered in 23 fields. The Center for European Integration promotes involvement with the rest of Europe and creating an education system consistent with European standards. Romanian students are graded on a scale of one to 10, where a six or below is failure.

    University of Bucharest

    • The University of Bucharest is located in Romania's capital city and considered the country's premiere place of higher education. Among the 14 departments are journalism, geology, Roman Catholic theology, physics and law. Most of the courses are taught in Romanian and international students must take a six-month to one-year preparatory language class. More than 20,000 students, including 1,000 international students, attend the university annually. Several on-campus publications release textbooks, journals and training manuals.

    Babe?-Bolyai University

    • Babe?-Bolyai University requires that international students be first accepted by the country's Ministry of Education. Scholarships are available that exempt tuition fees and provide free housing. Students can receive bachelor's, master's or Ph.D. degrees and many courses are offered in Romanian, Hungarian, German and English. Areas of study include geography, environmental sciences, history and business management. Multiple languages are taught including Romanian, Hungarian, Norwegian, Ukrainian and Chinese.
