Medical Assistant Certifications

There are several different types of medical assistant certifications offered through the American Association of Medical Assistants, National Health Career Association and American Medical Technologists. Medical assistants work under the supervision of a physician and perform tasks such as taking blood and vital signs, preparing rooms for patients and preparing and collecting specimens for laboratory tests. Below are some of the most common types of certifications available to medical assistants.
  1. Registered Medical Assistant

    • To become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), students will take an examination through American Medical Technologists to work for health centers, private medical offices, nursing homes, hospitals or other types of clinics. RMA's typically receive a two-year degree from a vocational school or community college before taking the examination.

The certification demonstrates that the assistant is trained to perform a variety of laboratory procedures and specialized clinical tasks that many hospitals or clinics may perform. A certification through this association gives applicants a significant advantage and displays considerable experience and education level.
