List of the World's Best Universities

According to "US News & World Report"'s 2009 ranked list, a large percentage of the world's top universities are located throughout the United States. Others on the list vary in location, situated in places such as Europe, Australia, China, and Japan. Six of the top 10 schools on the list are in the United States; the remaining four are in the United Kingdom.
  1. Harvard University

    • Harvard University, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is included on "US News & World Report"'s ranked list of universities as the number-one university in the world. The university consists of an undergraduate college and 13 different graduate schools and is the oldest higher learning institution in the United States. All undergraduate students at Harvard University are guaranteed dorm-style housing for the full four years of their undergraduate studies. As of the fall of 2009, approximately 6,700 undergraduate and 13,600 graduate students were enrolled at the university. The cost of undergraduate tuition, room, and board for the full 2009-2010 academic year was $48,868.

    The University of Cambridge

    • In 2009 The University of Cambridge celebrated its 800th anniversary, marking it easily one of the world's oldest universities. Cambridge consists of 31 different colleges, where students eat, sleep, socialize, and enjoy small-group teaching sessions. Each college functions as an independent unit, having its own income, property, staff, and students. Colleges select their own applicants, and most accept both undergraduate and graduate students. There are six different schools at the University of Cambridge, each of which is focused around a core subject matter, including arts and humanities, biological sciences, clinical medicine, humanities and social sciences, physical sciences, and technology. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available in all schools.

    The Australian National University

    • Founded in 1946, the Australian National University is a relatively new school, yet it has already established itself as one of the top universities in the world. As of 2008, approximately 16,700 students were enrolled at ANU, 9,600 of which were undergraduates. Undergraduate students can opt to pursue either a single or a combined bachelor's degree. Graduate programs include business and economics, arts and social sciences, engineering, computer science, law, medicine, biology, environment, and the physical and mathematical sciences. The Australian National University places a significant emphasis on the importance of research, organizing most courses and degree programs around research-led instruction.
